Stress at Work in Herts, Beds and Cambs – Free Business Health Check

Stress is recognised as both an economic and emotional cost to a business. The Health & Safety Executive acknowledges stress as a work-related illness, for which many organisations now have established work place risk assessments. Stress is a matter that businesses take seriously.
Workplace indicators of stress might include absenteeism, time keeping, grievance and disciplinary issues, accidents, gossip, atmosphere and of course high levels of staff turnover (perhaps masked in today’s economic climate). All of which can result in poor customer service, loss of public image, prolonged and frequent staff illness, poor productivity and increased health and safety claims. It is clear that assessing and managing stress risk is essential.
Putting into place a stress management policy does not need to be onerous and can be based on simple common sense approaches, such as just talking to staff and allowing them space to express themselves appropriately and raise concerns.
Simple things can be done to train and raise awareness of friends and staff that will:
- Help identify the stress warning signs
- Understand and get met human needs
- Encourage healthy lifestyles; exercise, diet, ideal weight, quit smoking and sleep
- Create a simple supportive environment (focused on getting the job done healthily)
- Provide a simple stress response plan
